Joy FM
Joy FM is a radio station based in Accra. It was Ghana’s first English-speaking private radio station, established in 1995 as the country's news and entertainment hub. Many private radio outlets followed after. Joy FM targets middle to upper income group of listeners. The station’s format consists of news and talk programming interspersed with entertaining music-based programs.
Joy FM is one of the country’s most patronised radio stations: GeoPoll’s radio stations ratings for the first quarter of 2017 places Joy FM third in the Greater Accra Region with an audience share of 9.6%. Nationwide it ranks fourth (4.4%), just behind CitiFM, its biggest competitor. In a survey by Goodman AMC, Joy FM was mentioned as a media news source, that Ghanaians would trust to provide first-hand and reliable information in the 2016 presidential election. Its program Election Forensics would hold a trust percentage of 27% and ranked second among radio programs.
Joy FM is part of the Multimedia Broadcasting Limited, one of Ghana’s biggest private media groups that covers radio, digital TV & Online. George Kwesi Twum, a businessman, is the majority shareholder as well as founder, CEO, and director of Multimedia Broadcasting Limited – according to the Registrar General Department’s official documents.
George Kwesi Twum owns 92.5 % shares and GBC represented by David Anaglate owns 7.5% shares in Multimedia Broadcasting Limited
Multimedia Broadcasting Limited was established in 1994 and rolled out considerably since then: it now has six radio stations in the Ashanti Region and Greater Accra Region, six news websites and a satellite television network. In addition to Joy FM the group owns Adom FM, Luv FM, Asempa FM, Hitz FM, Nhyira FM. It is today known as the Multimedia Group Limited although this change of name is not recorded at the Registrar General’s Department.
