The Blay Family
The Blay Family - Frederick Blay, Gina Blay and Kwame Blay - are the shareowners of Western Publications Limited, publishers of the Daily Guide newspaper.
The Daily Guide newspaper is the highest selling private newspaper in Ghana with an audience share of 18.9% equaling a total readership of 1,191,000 (GeoPoll, Q1 2017).
Frederick ‘Freddy’ Blay, who is the majority shareholder (66%) in Western Publications, is also the current Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party government. He was also recently appointed as the Chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC). Blay used to be a Member of Parliament for the Convention People’s Party in the Ellembelle constituency until 2008, when he lost the seat. He since then crossed carpet to the NPP and eventually became the acting Chairman after the substantive chairman of the party was suspended for breaching party rules.
Freddy Blay is married to Gina Blay who owns 19 percent shares in the company and in recent appointments of the NPP government sent to Germany as Ghana’s Ambassador. Until her appointment, she was the managing editor of the Daily Guide newspaper and the president of the Private Newspapers Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG).
Kwame Blay, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Blay owns the remaining 15% of the shares in the company. Kwame is presently the CEO of Western Publications Limited. Until his appointment, he was the Business Development Manager of the organisation.
