GTV
Ghana Television (GTV) is the first ever television channel to broadcast in Ghana. The TV station was established to propagate the policies and activities of the then colonel government. GTV since its inception has remained in the hands of the state. Today, its coverage is nationwide although faces stiff competition from other privately held television stations like TV3 and Multi TV.
GTV, according to Geopoll, a mobile survey platform, has the fifth highest audience share at 9%, measured for the first quarter in 2017 (January – March) in Ghana. In a survey by Goodman AMC, GTV was mentioned as a media news sources that Ghanaians would trust to provide first-hand and reliable information in the 2016 presidential election. Its program GTV News held a trust percentage of 10% and ranked four among TV programs.
GTV’s has a variety of programmes including reality shows, current affairs, entertainment, politics, sports, documentaries and live national events. The audience profile of GTV varies from policy makers, academics, rural folks and even children. In the run-up to the December polls in Ghana, a survey conducted by Goodman AMC (a research consulting firm), shows that GTV News was the fourth most trusted source of information by respondents during the period.
Ghana television is wholly owned by the state. The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) manages GTV and other media outlets across the ten regions in Ghana. GBC is a State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) with the State Enterprise Commission having supervisory responsibility of the organisation. The Director General of GBC, Dr. Kwame Akuffo Anoff-Ntow is a communication expert with vast experience in the field of journalism.
The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation was established in 1954 and was called the Gold Coast Broadcasting System. After Ghana gained independence in 1957, the organisation got its present name till date. Television was first started in Ghana in 1965 with GTV being the first player. Although it positioned itself as medium of education for the populace, its programming often reflected the political ideology of the ruling government of the day.
